چکیده

Background: The aim of the study was to compare the effect of propofol & sevoflurane with respect to hemodynamic changes, recovery profiles and complications in patients scheduled for various elective surgical procedures under general anesthesia. Method: Fifty ASA physical status I-II patients of either sex, aged between 18 and 60 years were randomly divided into two groups to receive either propofol infusion (group P, n=25) or sevoflurane (group S, n=25). Cardiovascular parameters, SpO2 and bispectral index (BIS) scores were recorded. Time to eye opening, hand squeezing and achieve modified Aldrete’s Score ≥ 9 and the incidence of complications were noted. Results: Early recovery times [eye opening, hand squeezing and achieve modified Aldrete’s Score ≥ 9] were significantly longer in group P (P < 0.001). Cardiovascular parameters, SpO2 and bispectral index (BIS) scores were comparable between the groups (P > 0.05). The incidence of post-operative nausea and vomiting was significantly higher in group S. Conclusions: The present study which adjusted propofol infusion rate and sevoflurane concentration according to BIS scores revealed that maintenance of anesthesia with sevoflurane is associated with faster recovery than anesthesia with propofol. Propofol resulted in a significantly lower incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Comparison of recovery profiles of propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia with bispectral index monitoring in percutaneous nephrolithotomy

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to evaluate the comparative effects of propofol infusion versus sevoflurane for maintenance of anesthesia with respect to hemodynamics, recovery characteristics, nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy. METHODS Forty American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I-II patients, aged between 22 and 65 years were randoml...

Sevoflurane versus propofol for interventional neuroradiology: a comparison of the maintenance and recovery profiles at comparable depths of anesthesia

BACKGROUND Sevoflurane and propofol are used widely for interventional neuroradiology (INR). Using the bispectral index (BIS), we compared the clinical properties of sevoflurane and propofol anesthesia in patients undergoing INR at comparable depths of anesthesia. METHODS The patients were allocated randomly into two groups. The sevoflurane group received propofol (1.5 mg/kg), alfentanil (5 µ...

Bispectral index monitoring during sedation with sevoflurane, midazolam, and propofol.

BACKGROUND Bispectral Index (BIS) has been used to measure sedation depth. Ideally, to guide anesthetic management, range of BIS scores at different sedation levels should not overlap, and BIS should be independent of drug used. This study assessed ability of BIS to predict sedation depth between sevoflurane, propofol, and midazolam. Quality of recovery was also compared. METHODS Patients und...

Bispecteral index facilitates postoperative recovery of elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery

Introduction: Elderly is considered from 60-65 years old, and 35% of all surgeries related to this age group. Surgical complications in these patients have a high incidence and to reduce these complications Bispectral (BIS) monitoring during the anesthesia can be used. This study was designed to investigate whether BIS monitoring improves clinical anesthetic delivery, recovery profiles in elder...

The effect of cerebral monitoring on recovery after sevoflurane anesthesia in ambulatory setting in children: a comparison among bispectral index, A-line autoregressive index, and standard practice.

BACKGROUND The bispectral index (BIS) and A-line autoregressive index (AAI) are electroencephalogram-derived monitoring indices of anesthesia. This study evaluated the efficacy of BIS- and AAI-guided sevoflurane anesthesia in children receiving ambulatory urologic surgeries. METHODS One hundred sixty children (aged 3-12 years) undergoing ambulatory urologic surgery were randomized to receive ...
